McCullum Doubt For Finals

New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum is a doubt for the rest of Kolkata’s IPL run-in because of the Kiwis tour of England.

The 26 year-old will almost definately not be released by the New Zealand board for the IPL because he is needed for the last two tests and a warm-up game against Northamptonshire. Justin Vaughan, the NZC chief executive, said he could not see the board agreeing to such a plan.

“It’s complete news to me,” Vaughan told the Dominion Post. “There was some talk after his big hundred in the tournament opener [158 not out off 73 balls] but we said ‘no’ and we would still say ‘no’.”

It comes after rumours the NZC were offered up to $1m by Lalit Modi for McCullum to skip a tour match and rejoin the Knight Riders.

It is a point proven that although cricket’s authorities are afraid of losing players to the IPL, Test cricket and player contracts are strong and players still adhere to them. Test cricket in my opinion should not be a slave to the IPL and should remain at the pinnacle of the sport.
